With lots of cool technologies being displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas, the one that is the most expected this year is the Microsoft's Project Natal.. In the coming months all the major tech giants like Microsoft, Hitachi etc. will be selling devices that allow you to flip channels on TV, move documents on your computer using simple hand gestures..
What the Gesture Revolution promises??!!
Imagine standing in front of your TV and turning it on with just a soft punch in the air.. You can flip channels by the twist of your wrist and an upward pat can increase the volume.. If you want to enlarge the photo on the screen, just hold your hands together and spread them apart and your image is enlarged!
Microsoft's beginning the gesture revolution with Project Natal..!
Microsoft will release a new video game known as Project Natal which is the beginning the gesture revolution.. It is an attempt to one-up Nintendo's Wii..
In Contrast to Nintendo's Wii which requires hypersensitive hand controllers to translate the body movements into on-screen action, Microsoft's Natal Project requires nothing but the human body..
Microsoft has demonstrated games like dodge ball where people can jump, throw balls at the opponents and dart out of the way of incoming ball using natural motions.. Other games have people confronting to fit through different shapes and performing skateboard stunts..!!
Other players in the Revolution..!!
Hitachi is also launching TV screens that will let you turn on the TV, scan through channels and change volumes using simple gestures..
Laptops with such technology are also expected to arrive in later 2010.. With such technology the touch-screens could go obsolete..
Obstacles faced in making this technology come alive:
To bring this gesture functions to life device makers needed to conquer the greatest of computer science's challenges.. It had to see the world in fine detail.. It meant a way to identify people sitting on the couch and to differentiate between a command and other activities like eating popcorn etc.. Little things like Sun, room lights and people doing annoying things stood as some of the obstacle the companies had to overcome.. Companies like GestureTek, Primesense and Canesta have spent a lot of time and effort in making this dream come true!!
With all the enormous possibilities of this technology, are you ready to welcome the gesture revolution??!!
